The university has announced a major new Poverty Initiative that is charged with establishing Notre Dame as a premier university in poverty-related research, student formation, and policy and program impact. Funds from this new program will be used to bolster population-related research in the social sciences through its Families and Communities in Transition (FACTS) program.
The program will be hiring three pre-doctoral (pre-doc) Research Associates who work closely with faculty in different social science disciplines to assist in the empirical research. This pre-doc position will work in the field of sociology, under the direction of two scholars in the department. Steven Alvarado will lead research in the areas of neighborhood effects, college attainment, and immigration. Elizabeth McClintock will supervise work in support of her research agenda on gender inequalities and time use within families.
This is an excellent opportunity for a student considering graduate school and would be a bridge between college and graduate school for students interested in empirical applied microeconomic research or quantitative sociological research. Research associates will perform a variety of tasks including coordinating project logistics, creating analysis files, statistically analyzing data, helping to create presentations, editing research papers, assisting in the preparation of grant proposals, assisting in the writing of IRB protocols and data sharing agreements, and assisting in the dissemination of project results.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Data Analysis:
● Maintain data sets according to IRB protocols
● Generate analytic files for statistical analysis
● Conduct the statistical analysis
● Summarize the results for the research team
● Keep detailed logs of research processes
Project Management:
● Work closely with the research team to construct data-sharing agreements
● Complete IRB protocols
● Arrange research team meetings
● Assist in the composition of research grant proposals
● Conduct literature reviews.
Project Dissemination:
● Support the research team in the construction of academic articles and academic presentations of results.
● Support the research team in efforts to disseminate results to non-academic audiences.
