THIS IS A GRANT-FUNDED POSITION 

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:   Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate performs a variety of research activities on the role of ion channel-coding cDNAs and the resulting expressed proteins, and the modification of ion channel protein function by physiologically relevant lipids and pharmacological agents, in particular agents involved in substance use disorders such as alcohol and volatile inhalation agents.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : 

  • Conducts PCR, real-time PCR, construct vectors, DNA subcloning and in vitro transcription of recombinant DNA.
  • Designs PCR primers, develop point mutants and chimeric channel subunits to determine amino acid participation in ligand recognition.
  • Develops and maintains cell cultures using mammalian expression lines (CHO, COS, etc.,).
  • Conducts cell transfection (both transient and stable), Western-blotting, immunohistochemistry, and other methods to identify protein expression.
  • Conducts cDNA nuclear and cRNA cytoplasmic injections in frog oocytes.
  • Conducts sucrose gradients for protein harvesting.
  • Supervises and keep maintenance of all devices and materials related to recombinant DNA work and other techniques mentioned above.
  • Maintains detailed logbook of experiments.
  • Supervises fellows, and junior employees in the laboratory.
  • Performs other duties as required.

    Qualifications

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

    EXPERIENCE:  Three (3) years of experience in biochemistry/molecular research laboratory. Documented proficiency (i.e., first author publications) with recombinant DNA, in particular with mutagenesis and expression of long DNA sequences.
