THIS IS A GRANT-FUNDED POSITION

 

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:   Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Research Associate performs drug discovery research involving the design and synthesis of small molecule therapeutics in various projects defined by the team in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs and synthesizes new selective ion channel inhibitors for neurological diseases.
  • Develops efficient synthetic routes for designed molecules to make target small molecule compounds.
  • Performs analytical chemistry experiments with NMR, LC/MS, HPLC, and elemental analyses to characterize the compounds.
  • Collaborates with other team members in the labs of the PI and the PI’s collaborators.
  • Formulates and implements short-and long-term goals.
  • Writes manuscripts, reviews articles/book chapters, contributes towards preparing new grant applications, and presents ongoing research at national scientific meetings.
  • Solves complex and varied problems utilizing a broad disciplinary perspective to identify solutions.
  • Conducts experimental troubleshooting. 
  • Performs other duties as required.

    Qualifications

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

    EDUCATION: Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

    EXPERIENCE:  Two (2) years of experience in medicinal chemistry. Strong publication record in small molecule drug design and synthesis, as demonstrated in multiple first-author papers in medicinal chemistry.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Strong skills in synthetic chemistry.
    • Knowledge of small molecule drug discovery and development.
    • Ability to work independently and creatively.
    • Ability to work with lab members, write publications, and assist the PI in grant applications.

    WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings.
