Function/Duties of Position

The Shyng Lab studies the role of ATP-sensitive potassium (K-ATP) channels in health and disease using biochemical, biophysical, and structural approaches. The Research Associate position will provide technical support for the lab, assist in management of the lab, help training and supervising new lab personnel, design and conduct research projects with minimum supervision.

Responsibilities include:

  • Construction and purification of recombinant plasmids and viruses, tissue culture, protein purification and analysis.
  • Laboratory management including ordering supplies, making stock solutions, autoclaving.
  • Supervising and training new support lab personnel.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's Degree in relevant field AND 3 years of relevant experience OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience

Experience:

  • At least five years of work experience as research assistant.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Experimental design and interpretation of results, basic molecular biological methods of DNA manipulation and analysis, gene analysis techniques, mouse colony management and genotyping, basic protein analysis techniques such as western blots, immunoprecipitation and immunostaining skills, mammalian cell culture, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Master Degree in science.

Experience:

  • Prior research experience in molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Knowledge and experience in the field of membrane protein biochemistry.

Additional Details

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is generally 30 hours per week during normal working hours, however, some evening and weekend work will be necessary on occasion. Hours may be flexible, but should fall within 7am and 6pm.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & EQUIPMENT USAGE:

Need to be able to work at lab bench, desk and/or microscope for up to 4 hours at a time. Ability to perform repetitive lab manipulations (gripping, grasping, reaching, twisting), move lab equipment under 25 pounds with accommodation, perform image analysis operation and help others with equipment use. Personal protective equipment must be worn as required. (Gloves, mask/respirator, eyewear, lab coat, etc.) Willing to work with radioactive materials, recombinant viruses, and small animals such as mice and rats.
