The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation is a large, multi-faceted Institute housed in a 33,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility on NC State University’s Centennial Campus in Raleigh. Our work encompasses educational research, professional development, policy and program evaluation, and direct services to schools, districts, state departments of education and public- and private sector organizations. We are deeply involved in work in throughout North Carolina, leading some of the major statewide K-12 education initiatives and working closely with the Department of Public Instruction, the State Board of Education, and the majority of school districts in the State on the transition to digital teaching and learning. The Friday Institute aims to hire a 1-year time-limited Research Associate (RA) to assist with work on a newly funded study for the Learning Analytics & Data Science (LEADS) team. The title of this study is Educator Selection and Evaluation: A Mixed-Methods Measurement Study of North Carolina’s Advanced Teaching Roles Program. This study is conducted on behalf of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and is a joint research partnership between the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and College of Education at NC State University, and Basis Policy Research.
This mixed-methods study aims to help school, district, and state ATR practitioners better understand the criteria, policies, and processes for selecting and evaluating Advanced Teachers. Specifically, this RA positions will assist the research in:
  • documenting current selection and evaluation criteria and processes used for advanced teaching roles.
  • examining the relationship between selection criteria and desired program outcomes.
  • developing and validating new measures for selecting and evaluating advanced teaching roles.
  • exploring the practical and ethical implications of these measures and processes.
  • provide data-informed recommendations and resources for ATR policies, practices, and programs.

  • This individual will contribute to the data collection and analysis activities, as well and day-to-day operations of the project. The RA will be expected at times to serve as a contact between school personnel, project team members, and the faculty members. The RA will also be responsible for collecting, inputting, editing, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, as well as assisting in creating and managing databases and online surveys. This person will conduct site visits, classroom observations, focus groups, interviews. In addition, the RA will contribute reports for the NCDPI, PSUs participating in the study, the funding agencies, and interested educators, researchers, and policymakers. The RA will be also responsible for helping to prepare papers for publication and presentation at professional meetings and will contribute to proposals for additional evaluation projects.
