About the Department
The UNC-NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering stresses the application of science and engineering, mathematical analysis, and computer techniques to biomedical problems. The research and entrepreneurship of the faculty, students, and staff aim to accumulate, generate, and disseminate biomedical engineering knowledge to improve health care for the benefit of the people of North Carolina, the nation, and the world.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Associate will be responsible for the following:
  • Mammalian cell culture: culture of established human cell lines and BSL2 primary human cells, especially endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and immune cells. Includes maintenance, expansion, and cryopreservation of cells.
  • Handling and manipulation of blood and blood products
  • Processing tissue specimens to dissociate and isolate multiple cell types
  • Preparation and maintenance of vascular microphysiological systems (MPS)
  • Fixing, immunostaining, and imaging vascular MPS
  • Confocal microscopy: acquisition of images from live and fixed MPS, time-lapses, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP), reflectance microscopy, etc.
  • Plasmid preparation and lentivirus transfection (e.g. to produce stable fluorescent protein expression in human cells), antibiotic selection
  • Additional molecular biology techniques: RT qPCR, ELISA, Western blotting, flow cytometry, etc.
  • Data and image analysis, preparation of figures and text for publications and grant submissions
  • Purchasing and receiving
  • Environmental health and safety (EHS) compliance, documentation, inspections
  • IRB and IACUC documentation
  • Maintaining liquid nitrogen and carbon dioxide gas cylinder supplies
  • Routine equipment maintenance and supervision and training of junior lab members.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required, preferably in a biomedical field
Other Required Qualifications
  • Aseptic mammalian cell culture technique at biosafety level 2 (potentially infectious human cells and tissue).
  • Molecular biology techniques such as ELISA, RT qPCR, Western blotting, etc.
  • Design and preparation of plasmids and viral transfection for protein overexpression.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Skills in microscopy, especially confocal, including live-cell imaging and preparation and staining for immunofluorescence imaging.
  • Experience in the isolation of cells from fresh tissue and exposure to 3D cell culture such as organoids and microphysiological systems.
  • Knowledge of vascular biology and thrombosis/hemostasis.
  • Established record of high-quality scientific publications.
  • PhD preferred
