Research Associate - Microbiology 

A research associate position is available in the Burcham lab in the Department of Microbiology at UTK (https://micro.utk.edu/faculty/burcham.php).

 

Research in the Burcham lab centers on understanding how bacteria interact with the human host. We employ a combination of techniques in molecular biology, next generation sequencing, and in vitro and in vivo models to understand the fundamental mechanisms that contribute to bacterial colonization and disease. Salary for this full-time position is commensurate with skills and experience and is eligible for benefits from the University of Tennessee.

 



Qualifications

 
Duties/Responsibilities:

This position will assist in the care and maintenance of epithelial and endothelial cell lines, work with BSL-2 pathogenic microorganisms, and perform molecular biology techniques including bacterial cloning, qRT-PCR, ELISAs, etc. This person will perform laboratory experiments to help support ongoing research projects and will assist in the training of undergraduate and graduate student on techniques performed in the laboratory. This position will also be responsible for recording data, maintaining a detailed laboratory notebook, and assisting with administrative tasks including helping to maintain training logs, laboratory ordering, and helping to maintain inventory of laboratory reagents and supplies. This position will also contribute to work involving the use of vertebrate animals.

 


Minimum Required Education and Experience:

-  M.S. degree in a related field (ex. microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry)

-  Hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology and microbiology/immunology

 


Minimum Required Skills and Abilities:

-   Understanding of basic laboratory safety procedures

-   Excellent written and verbal communication skill and organizational skills. Attention to detail is imperative for this position. A well-organized lab notebook must be maintained at all times.

  -  Ability to think critically and employ scientific problem-solving and troubleshooting.

  -  Ability to be respectful, collegial, and work well with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

-  Background knowledge in aseptic technique for bacterial or human cell culture

-  Background knowledge on molecular cloning techniques - DNA construct design, PCR, gel electrophoresis

-  General use of standard lab equipment including pH-meters, balances, autoclaves, pipettes

-  General background information on collecting scientific data and computer analysis (use of Excel and/or GraphPad Prism)

 


Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  -  Animal handling experience

-  Experience with culture of anaerobic microbes
