Research Associate, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center – Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) seeks to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer through innovative basic and clinical research, patient care, community education and outreach, and the training of cancer specialists for the future. Founded in 1970, LCCC is one of only 41 institutions in the nation designated by the NCI as a comprehensive cancer center, and it is the only comprehensive cancer center in the Washington, DC area.

The Research Associate is a member of the Ressom Lab, a research group focused on developing multi-omic approaches for biomarker discovery and systems biology research. They work on multi-omic analysis of liver tissues and blood samples to find and validate biomarkers for early detection of liver cancer, and will participate in the experimental design, and will closely with bioinformatics group to make sense of the eventual data and follow up with additional experiments. Reporting to the Lab Manager, the Research Associate has duties that include but are not limited to:

Experimental Design

  • Performs experimental design for omics studies.
  • Performs metabolite and protein extraction from biospecimens.
  • Acquires metabolomics and proteomic data by mass spectrometric methods.
  • Assists in analysis of metabolomics and proteomic data.

Lab Operation

  • Manages the day-to-day operations.
  • Performs maintenance and calibration of chromatography and mass spectrometry instrumentation.
  • Reaches out to sales representatives from various vendors to acquire necessary reagents and consumables.
  • Orders reagents and consumables.
  • Performs chemical inventories.

Training and Presentation

  • Writes protocols and authors papers.
  • Presents results at lab and scientific meetings.
  • Trains research staff, students, and graduate students.
  • Coordinates with Field Application Scientists from different vendors to schedule training on new platforms.

Qualifications

  • Master of Science or Ph.D. degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biological sciences or related field
  • Demonstrated analytical aptitude

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in sample preparation for proteomic and metabolomics studies
  • Operation and maintenance of LC-MS/MS and GC-MS instruments
  • Relevant skills and experience in targeted quantitation of metabolites by parallel reaction monitoring (PRM), selected reaction monitoring (SRM), and single ion monitoring (SIM)
