Research Associate

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Chemical Sciences Division, has an opening for a Research Associate to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will provide research support to a program involved with developing electrochemical devices for CO2 reduction, as part of a joint program between Berkeley Laboratory and other national lab partners. The hire will assist the principal investigator in the assembly, testing and performance analysis of dark electrolyzers for CO2 reduction to syngas.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Electrochemical measurements and device-level testing.
  • Formulation of electrode inks and additives for electrode fabrication
  • Determination of device efficiencies using electrochemical and chromatographic separation methods.
  • Support a major component of assigned research projects.
  • Able to interact productively with multiple members of a project team.
  • Performing research assignments including the collection, processing and analysis of data, while contributing to publications. Maintaining rigorous experimental records.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferred, in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or Applied Physics and with at least one year’s experience testing electrolyzers, or equivalent years of experience in a combination of education and related work experience
  • Essential knowledge and skills in basic electrochemistry and gas chromatography.
  • Competent writing ability.
  • Experience with data collection, workup and analysis in Matlab, R or python.
  • Experience with generating device mock-ups in CAD software such as Solidworks and/or AutoCAD.
  • A demonstrated ability to learn and apply new principles to research.
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to lift 10-20 lbs.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with thin-metal deposition via sputtering.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full time 16 month, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The hiring hourly range for this position is $24.46- $37.88.  Salary for this position is based on a step schedule and the final candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience (if applicable, and union contract agreement).
