Updated: 2 months ago
Location: Charlottesville, VIRGINIA
Job Type: FullTime

The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia invites applicants for a Research Associate position to work on the Mu2e experiment at Fermilab and the proposed LDMX experiment at SLAC.

We are currently playing a leading role on the Mu2e experiment, where we are responsible for the cosmic ray veto subsystem. We are also making important contributions to LDMX, a novel proposed experiment with unprecedented sensitivity to light dark matter.   The group is also active in the NOvA experiment and made significant contributions to the fabrication of the NOVA detector.  The Intensity Frontier effort at Virginia comprises two faculty, one research scientist, one postdoctoral researcher, and four graduate students, working under Professors Craig Dukes and the Craig Group.

The successful candidate is expected to take leading roles in managing Mu2e commissioning efforts for the cosmic ray veto and future UVA contributions to LDMX. Candidates are expected to be stationed at Fermilab but must be able to participate in substantial deployments to Charlottesville, VA and Palo Alto, CA.

QUALIFCATION REQUIRMENTS: Candidates must have a PhD degree in Physics or closely related field by the appointment start date.  A PhD in Experimental High Energy Physics is strongly preferred.  Strong knowledge, skills and experience in some of the following fields are required: experimental particle or nuclear physics, particle detector design, construction, or simulation. Candidates with experience in particle physics detector hardware will be preferred.  Experience with hardware, CAD software, and GEANT simulations will also be considered useful skills when considering candidates.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:  Apply online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/UVAJobs and attach a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a brief statement of research interests and the contact information for three individuals who can provide professional reference letters.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  Review of applications will begin on March 1, 2024, but the position will remain open until filled.
