The University of Miami’s Cooperative Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) has an opportunity for a full time Wordpress web developer with data visualization expertise Research Associate 3 to work in Miami or remotely, supporting NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division in Miami, FL.

This RA 3 will work in partnership with NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary system as well as the NOAA Integrated Ecosystem Assessment program. This position will work with a team to create web-enabled data visualization tools in an ecosystem context for a variety of resource management related projects.

Responsibilities include:

Web development

  • Create and maintain a site architecture that pulls from hosted data repositories as well as external online data repositories as well
  • Build, modify and maintain website functionality as the projects require

Project trend analysis and content connection

  • Create code for statistical analysis of trends in indicator data
  • Write, update and maintain front end project content in collaboration with project partners
  • Participate in/facilitate project stakeholder meetings to solicit and incorporate project feedback

Data maintenance and management

  • In collaboration with NOAA ONMS and IEA project partners, support development of standard operating procedures and protocols to facilitate data and metadata acquisition, ingestion and data storage architecture
  • Provide scientific oversight and operation of web-based data display and dissemination capabilities
  • Assist with development and maintenance of NOAA project data policies, templates, and workflow documentation to ensure ongoing compliance with community data quality procedures and data policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • Candidates should have a bachelor's or higher in computer science, engineering, computer engineering, marine science, information science or equivalent and at least 5 years of relevant work-related experience.
  • Deep experience with Drupal, Wordpress page lifecycle and database structure
  • Documented experience with: Building and maintaining WordPress-based websites, Using Git for collaboration (please provide GitHub username) , Writing WordPress plugins and themes, Using tools like Adminer/phpMyAdmin to directly access and modify WordPress databases, Using Local or other local WordPress development tools
  • Experience with Javascript charting libraries, such as Highcharts and Dygraphs
  • Knowledge of: CSS, HTML, Object-oriented PHP in the context of WordPress, Javascript in the context of Wordpress, JQuery, D3, mySQL
  • Experience with analyzing and displaying spatial data and large datasets
  • Knowledge of and experience with data management best practices and tools for ocean science data including data and metadata formats, information lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of biological statistics and ecosystem modeling using R, Matlab or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience to create and maintain formal and informal collaborations with other research groups and institutions.   
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills with ability to convey science to stakeholders and the public in a compelling fashion. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse stakeholder group including federal agencies, state, community and tribal agencies/organizations, and the academic community. 
  • Demonstrated self-starter with ability to develop and execute projects independently with limited daily guidance and oversight 
  • Basic knowledge of databases and scripting environments for data processing.
  • Strong project management skills.
