Join Dr. Clive Svendsen and his research group as a Research Associate II in the Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute!

The Svendsen Laboratory at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Regenerative Medicine Institute is looking for personnel to join our dynamic group. The mission of the Svendsen Laboratory is to study neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington’s disease (HD), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome (AHDS) using stem cells as a disease treatment, as well as a tool for modeling these diseases in vitro. Clive Svendsen, PhD, has significant experience in studying these diseases over the last twenty years and is merging his experience with the use of leading-edge technologies, such as inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells). The incumbent should have an interest in the basic science of stem cells and neurodegenerative diseases. Working with the PI and scientists, the RA-II performs a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of one or more laboratory research projects in a specific area of research. Assists in general laboratory activities, including maintenance of reagents and stocking of supplies. Files and monitors documents. Keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments and results. Assists in the operation of specialized equipment and machinery. Observes safety standards and procedures. This position may include supervisory responsibilities.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design of new complex or unusual protocols and techniques.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and supports laboratory operations
  • Maintains lab equipment and related records and may coordinate use of lab equipment.
  • Orients research laboratory assistants or lower level research associates and undergraduate student researchers on day-to-day lab operations and routine procedures.
  • Transports, processes and logs samples.
  • Maintains computer database with relevant clinical information.
  • Performs lab maintenance duties, including glassware cleaning and sterilization.
  • Maintains stocks of general lab materials, and places orders for lab equipment and supplies.
  • Assists new students and fellows at the laboratory.
  • Histology and Microscopy.
  • Sectioning of tissue specimens.
  • Staining of tissue specimens to include special stains and IHC.
  • May assist with animal husbandry/handling and related animal activities.

Department-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Perform standard and complex molecular biological techniques, cell culture of human stem cells, including maintenance, expansion and genetic modification using lentiviral vectors.
  • May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols and will analyze and interpret data.
  • Assist with the distribution of cell lines to Regenerative Medicine Institute members, maintain protocols and procedures, and preparation of data for publication.
  • BACKTRACK inventory system management of cryobanks.
  • Oversight of laboratory purchases, management of equipment usage and maintenance.
  • Maintenance and banking of stem cell cultures.
  • Differentiation of stem cell tissues into various neural cell types PCR and quantitative PCR Immunocytochemistry and Immunohistochemistry.

Education:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in biological science required. Master's degree, preferred.

Experience and Skills:

  • One (1) year of laboratory experience, required. Understanding of general research objectives.
  • Knowledge of routine laboratory procedures, experimental protocols, and overall lab organization.
  • Knowledge of microscopy, immunohistochemistry and Western blotting is a plus.
  • Experience with cell culture and animal work is required; experience with histology is preferred.
  • Ability to work with human tissue (stem cells), as well as small or large animals. Animal husbandry experience, preferred.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple clerical trials, and attention to details.
  • Applicant must be highly motivated and work independently.
  • Must have superior interpersonal, communication and organization skills and the ability to work across company disciplines and functional units, and computer application experience.
  • Must possess computer skills to include, but not limited to, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Scheduling flexibility including evening, weekend and holiday rotation commitment, if necessary.
