Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Associate II for the Center for Advanced Biotechnology & Medicine.
Under the direction of the faculty member, the Research Associate II is responsible for the conduct of highly specialized and technical research in the field of Neuroscience. Designs and conducts highly specialized and technical research. Performs various research and technical operations independently or as assigned, relating to the investigatory activities of the laboratory, followed by appropriate reports, interpretations, conclusions, and next experiments. The Research Associate II is responsible for managing the Neuroscience and regenerative medicine experiments in the laboratory including drug screening, cell culture, handling patient specimens and bioinformatical as well as statistical analyses. Materials to be analyzed include those obtained from human specimens, including brain tissues and cells. The Research Associate II will be expected to guide the research projects of other research staff and students in the laboratory, as requested by the PI.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs various biochemical, molecular, cell biology and molecular genetic research relative to ongoing investigations in the field of human brain development and disorders. These studies are conducted both independently and in collaboration with other members of the laboratory research team, as well as internal and external collaborators.
  • Both independently and at the request of the faculty member, participates in the design and conduct of experiments aimed at understanding human brain development, disorders, and other research areas as assigned.
  • Participates in the development of performance standards, selection of methodology and instrumentation necessary to conduct research experiments and to ensure conformance with the goals and objectives of the department. Maintains laboratory infrastructure and participates in training of students and staff.
  • Conducts experiments and maintains complete records documenting experimental design, methodologies, results, interpretations, and next experimental plans.
  • Generates, compiles and presents statistical data with appropriate conclusions and recommendations as pertinent to research activity. Prepares reports of research in appropriate formats suitable for grant applications, progress reports, and publications.
  • Troubleshoots experimental problems with background knowledge in molecular, genetic, and cell biology and prior experiences in these fields.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. Degree in Neuroscience, Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology or a related science, or a Master’s Degree in a relevant science plus three (3) years of related research experience.
  • Experience is required with standard molecular biology techniques, biochemical techniques, cell culture, and viral techniques, biostatistics and bioinformatics, and Neuroscience research.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed scientific publications as first or senior author.
  • Evidence of successfully obtaining research funding or fellowships.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience with drug screening and extensive human cell culture technique.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous mentoring experience is desirable.
Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Physical Demands: Standing, sitting, walking, talking, seeing, and hearing. Manual dexterity and vision sufficient for standard laboratory operations including pipetting and use of microscopes. Must be able to lift or exert force up to twenty (20) pounds. Computer data input required.
  • Work Environment: Laboratory environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to hazardous chemicals and blood borne pathogens including human blood, drugs and possible exposure to carcinogens and other hazardous chemicals. Universal precautions are mandatory. Requires weekend, evening, and holiday work.
