The Mellon College of Science (MCS) Departments of Biological Sciences and Computational Biology are seeking a full-time Research Associate II to work in the laboratory of Dr. Irene Kaplow. The Kaplow lab is interested in deciphering the roles that differences between species in transcriptional regulatory elements play in vertebrate evolution. We are also excited about using differences in transcriptional regulation between species to provide insights into gene regulatory mechanisms.

We seek a highly motivated Research Associate II to oversee and participate in lab operations, experiments, and training scientists without much prior wet lab experience. While the wet lab manager's responsibilities will be almost entirely administrative and experimental, the lab manager will have the opportunity to work closely with computational biologists.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining lab supplies.
  • Complying with lab safety guidelines and communicating them to new lab members.
  • Preparing stocks and aliquots of buffers and reagents widely used by the lab and organizing additional reagents as they are ordered or generated.
  • Maintaining and organizing electronic lab notebooks and being a positive role-model for new lab members of thoroughly documenting experiments.
  • Following, improving, and designing experimental protocols.
  • Assisting with analyzing experimental data and communicating results to other lab members.
  • Assisting with mammalian cell culture, including generating and maintaining cell lines, preparing cell media, and conducting assays.
  • Assisting with mouse work, including overseeing mouse colony, performing mouse injections, and performing mouse dissections.
  • Assisting with regulatory genomics experiments in tissue samples and cell lines, including RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and massively parallel reporter assays.

Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within MCS. Inclusion, collaboration and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who is able to effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

You should demonstrate:

  • Experience with basic molecular biology techniques, including pipetting, molecular cloning, and nucleic acids extraction.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Experience working with rodents.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with a major or minor in biology, bioengineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of wet lab experience.

Requirements:

  • Successful background check
