The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1979 to conduct basic and applied research in robotics technologies relevant to industrial and societal tasks. Seeking to combine the practical and the theoretical, we have diversified efforts and approaches to robotics science while retaining the original goal of realizing the potential of the robotics field.

Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute is searching for a Research Associate I. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by researching and developing on NSF NRI and Toyato Research Institute projects.


Core responsibilities will include:

  • May program software in support of job functions. Attends project meetings.
  • Identifies problems and obstacles to progress; develops strategies to solve problems.
  • Summarizes statistical information for analysis, examination or presentation; writes technical reports. May build and validate quantitative models.
  • Performs research experiments following experimental protocol and procedures. Researches and documents information by compiling and maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Uses a variety of software packages to input, manipulate, collect and record results or observations.
  • Research and development on NSF NRI and Toyato Research Institute projects.
  • Software programming and debugging.
  • Data analysis.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.



Bachelor's Degree in a related field required. Master's Degree in a related field preferred.

Minimum of 1 year of experience with software programming for computer vision applications.

Proficient in debugging process highly desired.

Strong analytical skills, problem-solving and reasoning skills, and oral and written communication skills.


You should have excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, as well as good analytical and problem solving skills.
