Position Summary

A Research Associate I (RAI) position is available immediately at Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope in the laboratory of Dr. Markus Kalkum. In particular, the RAI will assist the lab with research activities, including molecular cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins from E. coli or other expression systems, using a range of techniques, including metal affinity chromatography, size exclusion FPLC, refolding approaches and preparative dialysis. Experience in molecular biology, molecular cloning, DNA isolation, plasmid preparations, SDS PAGE analysis, culture of microorganisms, protein purification is advised. If not already experienced, we offer the opportunity to learn mass spectrometric analysis of proteins, peptides, and other biomolecules.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Utilizing laboratory equipment and established protocols, performs a variety of research experiments. Records and validates results for accuracy and completeness.
  • May modify protocols.
  • Write standard operating procedures and reports.
  • Maintains records of work performed including results and methodology; utilizing records may calculate, graph and compile data.
  • Develops techniques and expertise in one or more areas relevant to laboratory research project.
  • Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with safety procedures and guidelines in handling, storage and disposal of materials.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, biochemistry, immunology, or a related area.
  • Experience in protein biochemistry and microbiology.
  • 0-2 years of research/laboratory experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
