Brief Position Overview
A position is immediately available in the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology at Montana State University in the Boyd Lab (www.geoboydology.com). We are looking for a highly motivated and collaborative individual with a background anaerobic microbiology. The ideal candidate will have experience in culturing anaerobic organisms, an understanding of microbial physiology, and an understanding of geochemistry. Our broad research portfolio offers a unique opportunity to work with an outstanding and diverse research team at the interface of Microbiology, Biochemistry/Biophysics, Minerology, and Geochemistry. We have a strong record of success with publishing high-impact papers and securing external funding from the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) and are looking for the next member of our team.

Position Details


General Statement
A Research Associate is needed to assist with culturing of anaerobic microorganisms on minerals and general microbiology laboratory experiments.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will work directly with Dr. Boyd and collaboratively with the Boyd Lab research team to assist in carrying out experiments involving cultivation and maintenance of microorganisms, conduct -omics and geochemical experiments, and maintain the general lab. Specific responsibilities include:
1. Culture anaerobic organisms on natural and synthetic minerals
2. Synthesize and characterize natural and synthetic minerals.
3. Keep well-organized records and notebooks.
4. Assist with overall lab management, including organization of sample inventories and general microbiology and/or molecular biology and geochemical techniques.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Ph.D. in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biology, Geochemistry/Geoscience, or related fields
  • Experience with culturing microorganisms
  • Demonstrated organization and written communication skills

  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience with geochemical and mineralogical characterization methods
  • Knowledge in microbial physiology and metabolism
  • Experience with molecular biology and bioinformatics (shotgun DNA/RNA sequencing)
  • The Successful Candidate Will
    * Be organized and able to work collaboratively with others.
    * Develop creative experiments to test specific hypotheses.
    * Carry out general microbiology tasks and perform anaerobic culturing and omics techniques.
