Research Associate, Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Charlottesville, VIRGINIA
Job Type: FullTime

Prof. Huiwang Ai’s Lab in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia seeks two postdoctoral research associates.

The main focus of our lab is the development of molecular biosensors that provide insights into cellular and organismal signaling. We employ state-of-the-art techniques such as directed evolution, fluorescence imaging, bioluminescence imaging, synthetic chemistry, genetic screening, and mass spectrometry to unravel complex biological pathways related to redox biology, metabolism, and neuronal activity. Furthermore, we explore the application of protein-based tools in live cells and rodent models to better understand pathophysiology and develop innovative therapies for conditions like diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer.

We hope to hire postdocs to characterize our new biosensors in animal models, use the new tools to understand questions related to neurobiology and Alzheimer’s disease, and develop new strategies to treat cancer. Previous experience in handling mice or using mice as a model organism is preferred.

The incumbents will participate in a diversity of relevant lab projects and be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings and seminars, national and international conferences, as well as work collaboratively with other lab members and collaborators. The incumbents will receive personalized guidance and training to support their career goals, whether in industry or academia. Beyond scientific skills, there will be a focus on developing professional skills such as writing papers and grants, delivering presentations and talks, and leading and managing a team. Opportunities for training and mentoring junior lab members will be provided, allowing incumbents to establish themselves as scientific leaders in their field.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.
