Research Associate - Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory

Research Associate, Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory. A Research Associate with specialization, experience, and training in dendrochronology is sought for a position at the Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory starting 1 September 2023 (or a mutually agreed date). This position is to collaborate on and to support the research of the Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory (approximately 0.67 FTE of role) and to support and assist with teaching in dendrochronology (a class in one semester each year – and the laboratory training of students in dendrochronology (approximately 0.33 FTE of role). Teaching experience is preferred but not required. Appropriate academic title (Teaching Associate or Lecturer) will be based on role. The position reports to and works with the Director of the Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory. Candidates must hold (by start date) a PhD and must have training/experience in dendrochronological fieldwork, training/experience in dendrochronological laboratory work, training/experience and facility with tree-ring sample preparation, sample recording and analysis, including crossdating, chronology-building and subsequent tree-ring time-series analysis for dendrochronological research (e.g. Dendro Program Library routines and more recent equivalents). Experience/interest in archaeological dendrochronology (or other cultural heritage relevant areas), and/or isotope/climatic applications in dendrochronology, is preferred. Competence (B2/C1 or above) in oral and written English is a pre-requisite. Candidates should be able to work both in a small team and independently without constant supervision. The position is to work on current and future Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory projects (and experience or interest in some of the scope/regions of Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory research would be an advantage). The position will collaborate on these research projects and their further development and will take part in (and be in part responsible for) all aspects of the research process from sampling through analysis and also to include assisting with grant and funding applications, collaboration and involvement in publication, and production of necessary reports and other outputs. Familiarity with (at least some of) a range of standard dendrochronology software and data management and analysis tools is required, and other data analysis, GIS, or IT skills (e.g. R or web-oriented) would be an advantage. The position is for 3 years in the first instance with an initial 1-year probation period. The Research Associate is required to be in residence in person at Cornell except when undertaking Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory projects based elsewhere, or during leave periods.
