Research Associate - College of Fine Arts - School of Architecture

Job Type: PartTime

Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Fine Arts (CFA) - School of Architecture is searching for a Research Associate to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment.

Entangled Stories of the Fishing Communities of the Koshi is a storybook of design methodologies that emerges from students’ work in the Spring 2023 Advanced Synthesis Options Studio (ASOS) taught by Priyanka Bista. Among the ten stories from the studio, one tale traces the lives and conflicts of two fishing communities of the Koshi, the Malaha fishing cats, and the Malaha fishermen by Ankitha Vasudev. Belonging to the same fishing tribe, the two stakeholders and their communities navigate the same landscape, struggling to share the same resources.

Through this storybook, the interest is in articulating and laying out the steps, methods, and techniques designers can use while working in multispecies conflict zones in the Global South. In doing so, the project highlights new methods and views in the field of multispecies design, which is currently predominantly situated within the Eucentric parts of the world. The storybook will provide a platform for the stories of local marginalized communities living in biodiversity-rich landscapes, who are often excluded from biodiversity conservation or multispecies design fields. The audience of this storybook will be designers, professors, and students working in the complex multispecies contexts of the Global South.

In light of the above, Professor Bista is looking for a research associate who will work with her to edit and finalize the storybook of methodology. This person might also work on developing methodology tools and cards.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Edit and develop illustrations for the storybook based on the current drawings.
  • Conduct research to further develop the storybook and the methodologies.
  • Assist in researching and developing methodologies based on methods and tools from the fields of biodiversity conservation, multispecies design, international development, architecture, and landscape architecture.

Expected Deliverables:

  • 11x17 storybook completed by March 31st 2024.
