Pay Range Information
Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.

Job Description Summary
The Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy at Chapman University seeks up to three two-year research associates, beginning in August 2024. Candidates in the disciplines of economics and philosophy are particularly welcome, but we will seriously consider any candidate interested in pursuing work that cuts across disciplines of social sciences and humanities more broadly.
The Smith Institute houses scholars from economics, literature, film and philosophy. Its mission is to reintegrate the study of economics and the humanities, and to combine undergraduate education and research as a discovery process. Members of the institute are encouraged to pursue these aims by teaching innovative classes.
This is an exempt Academic Professional/ Administrator position. This position is eligible for participation in our health and welfare benefits, supplemental retirement plan, accrued sick time, vacation, and Holiday pay.
Responsibilities
  • We seek candidates with the ability to generate and publish research of the highest quality. Research associates will also be expected to teach one course per year.
  • Design and execute research methodology
  • Collaborate with other faculty with similar research interests.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Economics, Philosophy, or relevant field if research; or equivalent prior to beginning the position. Applicants must address in their cover letter how their teaching and research fit with the mission of the Smith Institute and the value that transdisciplinary research and teaching will have for their career.
  • Knowledge of and with the ability to conduct research and experimental methods.
  • Strong writing skills and communication skills to interact with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to work with confidential information.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty members and follow proper protocols and university policies and procedures.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and analytical skills to formulate and communicate findings.
  • Proven ability to work part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills to plan, prioritize deadlines and perform multiple tasks without supervision.
  • Technical skills to learn and use enterprise skills and departmental tools
