Summary
A research associate position in neuroscience/metabolism is available at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. The lab is in a small growth phase and the ideal candidate will be able to work independently with the ability to learn new skills and techniques. The ideal candidate will hold a Master's degree in the life sciences and have experience in molecular biology and mouse surgeries. The ability to perform cell culture including genetic manipulations in cell culture, is highly desired.
The Sisley lab is in the Children's Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine. Our research focuses on the brain control of energy and glucose homeostasis. We are specifically interested in 1) the role of the vitamin D receptor in the brain on glucose control and 2) the effect of genetic variations on weight regulation. Our ultimate goals are to understand the biology of obesity and diabetes, and to use this knowledge to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with obesity and/or diabetes.
Job Duties
- Prepare and conduct in vivo experiments
- Perform rodent surgeries (intracerebroventricular cannulas and injections)
- Oversee mouse colonies including maintenance of Microsoft Access database, setting up breeding pairs, and analysis of genotyping data from third party
- Collect, compile and analyze data using Microsoft Excel and GraphPad Prism
- Select, evaluate and apply techniques for routine molecular work (such as westerns and rtPCR)
- Conduct immunohistochemistry experiments
- Supervise undergraduate students
- Help train graduate students or postdoctoral fellows
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field. Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
- Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Must be highly motivated and be able to work independently
- At least three years of experience post-degree in basic molecular techniques (rtpcr, genotyping, western blotting) and mouse experimentation
- Proficiency in intraperitoneal and subcutaneous mouse injections
- Prior animal surgical experience
- Cell culture experience with creating constructs for gene manipulations (i.e. site specific mutations, luciferase constructs)
- Experience with immunohistochemistry
- Experience with neuroanatomy and stereotactical injections
