Essential Functions (Job Duties)
The Research Assistant, under the direction of the Principal Investigator, provides scientific and technical assistance to complete research projects. May help write protocols, assist in manuscript preparation and maintain the laboratory. Designs and performs experiments independently or as directed through training in more difficult or specialized procedures to meet the needs of research projects. This position is for a one year term.
Essential Functions include:
Responsible for preparation/submission of Institutional Review Board (IRB) and NIH paperwork including independent completion of IRB documents and forms within the WSU eprotocol system, and Research Performance Progress Reports for NIH grants.
Maintain and track all recruitment documentation and develop study related materials and resources and update manuals of operating procedures.
Trouble shoot participant application and/or technology issues, as quantitative data is collected online.
Monitor participant study information to document the progress of research participants through each stage of the study, including the number of participants who started and completed the study. Distribute and track participant compensation.
Assist with preparation of abstracts, presentations and manuscripts including preparing tables/ figures/graphs, reviewing drafts, and assisting the Principal Investigator with formatting and referencing the data.
Prepare agendas, schedule meetings, and take notes for project-related meetings. Track project timelines and milestone achievements. Participate in weekly lab meetings; provide study reports during weekly lab meetings.
Provide child life services for ambulatory and inpatient children and families. Provide information, education and support to participants and families on issues pertaining to hospitalization, illness, medical experiences and growth and development.
Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team through program planning and team meetings in order to provide services in a holistic manner. Consults with other team members regarding the developmental status and individual needs of children to promote adaptation to treatment.
Prepare educational resources for community stakeholders. Presents evidence-based programs to health care professionals and to the community regarding child health and development, the impact of illness, injury and hospitalization on children and families and parent education.
Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research. Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist staff with experiments/research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.
Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data. Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.
Assist principal investigator with writing methods and summarizing/organizing data to be used in preparing and presenting presentations for professional, scientific and academic conferences and submittal to academic and scholarly peer-reviewed journals.
Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Unique Duties
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required in Child Life, Child Growth and Development, or related field.
Completion of a Child Life internship.
Ability to work independently. Strong ability to collaborate and work as a team member. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong analytical skills. Detail oriented, with strong organizational skills. Exceptional time management skills, as time will be split across multiple research projects. Ability to work in a community, clinic, and lab settings. Good clinical knowledge related to the provision of Child Life Services. Must be skilled in SPSS, MS Office, Including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Research lab is located at the MidMed Building in the Population Studies and Disparities Research Program within the Wayne State University Department of Oncology. This position is for a one year term.
