Essential Functions (Job Duties)
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, provide scientific and technical assistance to
complete laboratory based, clinical or population science research. May assist in writing research protocols and in manuscript preparation. Design and perform research protocols independently or as directed through training in more difficult or specialized procedures to meet the needs of the research protocol.
Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research. Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist staff with experiments/research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.
Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data. Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.
Assist principal investigator with writing methods and summarizing/organizing data to be used in preparing and presenting presentations for professional, scientific and academic conferences and submittal to academic and scholarly peer-reviewed journals.
Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.
 
Unique Duties
Perform independent or supervisory roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. Prepare scientific manuscripts, proposals for funding agencies, operation of research equipment, supervision of graduate students and other lab/field personnel in research.
43% - Perform microvascular surgery, physiologic studies (pulmonary, cardiovascular, neurobiological, and integrative physiologic) in rodents, conduct in vitro and in vivo functional studies
20% - Perform molecular biology studies including RT-PCR, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, imaging studies.
20% - Data analyses, manuscript development, and grant writing.
15% - Bank, catalog samples and maintain databases, maintain project inventory, work relatively independently on carrying out research, train research students as needed, coordinate and cooperatively work with other lab staff, assist in all lab studies
2% - Other job related duties as required
 
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field of study, preferred.
Requires advanced knowledge predominantly intellectual in character in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.
Experience performing basic research techniques.
 
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Education: MS with experience in area.
Preferred Experience: Experience with in vivo functional studies, surgical skills, molecular biology, and manuscript writing. Also, minimum of 2 years of experience working with rodents.
Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment
Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks. Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
Communication skillset, ability to organize and plan studies
Knowledge with design of experiments
The knowledge of Western blotting, Histology, RT-PCR and the Molecular biology skillset.
Surgical skillset with rodent model.

Working Conditions
Typical work environment may include a laboratory and/ or office environment. May require working non-standard business hours including evenings and weekends. May be required to travel to scientific conferences.
