The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) earned the highest rating – R1 – for a research institution from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, the gold standard for assessment. The rating was given to only 115 of the 4,665 universities evaluated in 2016. The Office of Research facilitates the creation of new knowledge and the development of innovative solutions by supporting research across the sciences, arts, and humanities that enhances the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and spurs economic growth.
The Office of Research, and its staff, are responsible for central research administration, oversight of research policy and compliance, and internal research development programs. The Office is part of Academic Affairs, and includes the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Office of Undergraduate Research, as well as several research centers.

Job Summary
The research assistant will provide data analysis support for program activities of the Socially Responsible Evaluation in Education Department (SREed), aiming to improve educational equity for students of all backgrounds. This research and evaluation program includes projects on early literacy interventions, educator effectiveness, and mixed-methods research. This position offers an opportunity for professional growth within a collaborative research environment.
The research assistant will contribute to research projects designated by a senior data scientist and a lead researcher by collecting data, preparing data sets, and conducting exploratory analyses. The graduate assistant works as part of a team under supervision of the senior data scientist.
Position Responsibilities:

· Collect publicly available data under the guidance of senior data scientists.
· Prepare datasets for analysis including cleaning, validation, transformation, integration of multiple data sources, and data management.
· Organize and document steps taken for data preparation.
· Conduct exploratory data analysis to find data patterns and address research questions chosen by senior researchers.
· Create data visualizations and reports to clearly articulate patterns to other research staff.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 1-2 years’ experience with R, Python, or Stata (R preferred)
  • Admitted UW-Milwaukee Graduate Student

Preferred Qualifications
  • ArcGIS and geospatial data
  • Machine learning methods
  • Familiarity with the US education system
