Research Assistant Qualifications

Research assistants should be anyone:

• Who is interested in using technologies for social good and justice.

• Who is interested in Citizen Science projects like iNaturalist and research surrounding open-source data and ecological modeling.

• Who is interested in modeling complex-structured, high-dimensional data.

• Who has strong skills in R programming.

• Who has strong mathematical and statistical skills and facility with topics including linear algebra, probability, regression, and machine learning.

Research Assistant Duties

Research assistants (RAs) participating the project have following duties.

1. Literature review

a. Study approaches for handling bias in Citizen Science data.

b. Study existing longitudinal methods applied in Citizen Science-based ecology.

2. Database development

a. Identify Citizen Science databases like iNaturalist which contain functional data.

b. Scrape and clean the data; process the data from points to curves.

c. Create and document a library of Citizen Science-based functional data.

3. Research and development on functional modeling and machine learning

a. Study machine learning and functional data analysis techniques and apply them to create a cohesive ecological analysis.

b. Because research on machine learning and functional data requires more experience and technical skill, a graduate student or an experienced undergraduate is preferred.

The assistantship would start immediately and has the potential to continue through Summer 2024.
