Position Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The UNC Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC), founded by the North Carolina State Legislature in 1965, works to reduce deaths and injuries on North Carolina’s roads and the entire nation. The Center advances these goals across all surface transportation modes through a balanced, interdisciplinary program of research, evaluation, information dissemination, and training. HSRC works with communities and transportation professionals locally, nationally, and worldwide. We are a leader in the field of transportation research, embrace a safe systems approach, and are focused on safety for all. |

Position Summary | This position is for a temporary, full or part time Research Assistant position that will provide project support for an ongoing study related to roadway design approaches to improve safety for all road users. The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for following established protocols to extract and code data for use in the study using a variety of video, spatial and web-based data collection tools. The candidate will offer strong organizational skills and the ability to observe, monitor, collect, record, and handle data and prepare data for analysis. The candidate will also contribute to project documentation and will assist in preparing reports and publications. This position will work closely with Center team members to accomplish work and meet project deadlines. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Must be able to follow instructions through a standard work process; have the ability to perform routine or repetitious tasks; have the ability to perform detail-oriented work that requires mental concentration; and have the ability to check work for accuracy before completion of tasks. Must demonstrate strong professional skills and the ability to work independently. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and experience with data processing. Statistical analysis and GIS skills are not required but will be considered. |
