Position Summary
This study will provide program evaluation data on a pilot cohort of >200 PhD students at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The research assistant will support the conduct and management of research development activities, primarily focused on a mini-course examining the role of racial identity within biology & biomedical science careers. We will compare 1st year PhD students’ understandings of the intersections of race, racism, and science before and after participation in the mini-course. The project will involve qualitative data collection of interviews and/or focus groups with participating students, the course developers, and the course facilitator. The research assistant will be involved with finalizing the interview guide, conducting interviews and/or focus groups, developing and revising a codebook, coding and analyzing data using qualitative software, and writing final evaluation reports. The assistant’s primary task for the quantitative component would include creating new variables, labeling variables, and identifying missing values or errors.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Experience working with qualitative data collection
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Knowledge of statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, or Stata) to clean quantitative data from a questionnaire administered to students.
