Job Description Summary:
JUNTOS Center for Advancing Latino Health is seeking a Bilingual Spanish-English Research Assistant to join our team. The Research Assistant will work in health research, outreach, and educational projects aimed at improving the health of Latino communities in Kansas and beyond. One of their primary responsibilities will be to accurately translate content from English to Spanish and vice versa. A strong command of both languages and cultural awareness are key. Main activities will take place in the Kansas City Metro Area and some travel to other areas in Kansas and western Missouri may be required.
Duties will include translation, report writing, coordination of projects, community outreach, and qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. Must have own transportation and be willing to work some nights and weekends with a flexible schedule.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree degree in Translation, Public Health or related field. Relevant experience may substitute for education on a year-to-year basis.

Work Experience:

  • Bilingual: Experience writing and communicating in Spanish and English.

  • Prior experience translating (English-Spanish) documents, researching topics and consulting with experts to clarify terms.

  • Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Certification:    

  • Translator Certificate.

Work Experience:

  • Prior work experience as a part of research team in the field of public health.

  • Experience working with Latino communities.

Job Duties:

  • Translate a variety of health research and educational materials (English-Spanish/Spanish-English) such as informed consent forms, research surveys, interview guides, educational curriculums, and presentations.

  • Ensure accuracy and fidelity to the original content, preserving the tone of the original material.

  • Work with colleagues to transcreate Spanish-language content for multimedia materials including print, audio and video.

  • Collaborate with researchers and other stakeholders to understand project needs and define timelines.

  • Proofread and edit English and Spanish documents including research and communications materials to maintain high-quality standards.

  • Transcribe and translate audio files including interviews and focus groups.

  • Assist with tracking of projects activities and develop project-specific reports.

  • Support research activities. Specifically, support the recruitment of participants for research studies; implementation of surveys, interviews, and focus groups; adaptation of programs to the Latino population; and elaboration of scientific literature reviews and preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations.

  • Support and coordinate outreach activities such as staffing health-related community-based events, conducting educational presentations, and coordinating with clinical partners and social service organizations.

  • Manage communications with community stakeholders. Maintain positive relationships with Latino community and community leaders.

  • Assist the Director in special projects as necessary.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
