Summary of Job Duties:

The Research Assistant will report to and work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) in a dynamic research laboratory environment. This person will 1) plan and conduct biological research studies using human specimens and animal models under the direction of the PI (20%); 2) prepare and analyze biological samples from those studies using common biochemical techniques such as western blotting, PCR, and microscopy (50%); 3) develop or modify standard testing procedures (10%); 4) perform administrative duties including record keeping, supply inventory, and supply ordering (10%); and 5) attend to other duties as assigned (10%). The candidate must have the ability to organize and manage laboratory space and inventory and must exercise great attention to detail. He or she must also have the ability to communicate effectively within the lab and with department administrators and purchasing personnel, and to contribute information and ideas across all relevant aspects of lab efforts. The primary areas of research emphasis in the laboratory are 1) exploring pathophysiological mechanisms of xenobiotic toxicity, 2) developing biomarkers of drug-induced liver injury, and 3) elucidating fundamental molecular mechanisms of tissue repair after injury.

Qualifications:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and execute experiments involving human specimens as well as rodent models of disease
  • Prepare and analyze biological samples using common biochemical techniques
  • Develop, modify, or apply new testing procedures for the laboratory
  • Administrative duties, such as inventory management
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree plus 3 years of research experience

Education, special or professional: Completed undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, or related field.

Special knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Highly motivated.
  • Highly organized and responsible.
  • Experience working with animals in research.
  • Experience performing common laboratory techniques, including western blotting and PCR.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Special knowledge, abilities and skills: Experience performing cell culture.
