The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Research Assistnat to serve as a member of the Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics team. Job Description Summary: The Research Assistant is responsible for conducting research studies, maintaining records, and molecular/immunohistochemistry analyses. Duties include (but are not limited to) daily health checks of rodent subjects, behavioral assessment of motor, sensory, and psychological functions after injury, maintenance of excel spreadsheets documenting experiment results, managements of computer records from telemetric recordings of animal activity, immunohistological assessment of spinal tissue, unbiased stereology on the confocal microscope, ordering and maintaining records of laboratory supplies.

Required Education:

  • Appropriate bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor of Science

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with small animal spinal surgeries and subarachnoid/intraspinal injections.

  • Experience with Digigait assessment and behavioral testing of rats and mice

  • Lab experience, specifically with molecular and immunohistochemical assays

  • Animal handling and husbandry experience.

  • Knowledge of unbiased stereology and confocal microscopy.

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities


 

Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Rodent surgical expertise.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform rat contusion injuries and subsequent treatments via subarachnoid and ultrasound-assisted intraspinal injections.
  • Conduct behavioral assessment of rodents.
  • Conduct unbiased stereology, quantification of cell populations and receptors in injured spinal tissue.
  • Perform general husbandry with spinally injured rodent subjects.
  • Chemical preparation, ordering supplies, management of data spreadsheets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
