What we want   


The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for an Research Assistant to serve as a member of the Microbial Pathogenesis and Immunology team. The Research Assistant is a full-time grant-funded position in the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis and Immunology. This role Aassists with experiments related to bacterial pathogenesis and/or immunology and maintains the laboratory. The Research Associate will perform skilled, administrative, and managerial support in research. This position evaluates and summaries results and keeps detailed records.  They will make buffers and media as well as maintaining bacterial and cell cultures. Plans and directs certain phases in research projects.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Experience in laboratory research in the field of bacterial pathogenesis and/or immunology

  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with sterile techniques and making simple solutions

  • Experience with cell and bacterial cultures

  • The ability to work both with macrophage cell lines as well as primary macrophages

Responsibilities:

Research Duties

  • Performs experiments related to bacterial pathogenesis and immunology.

  • Assists in the design, plan, coordinate, and execution of experiments using standard techniques of routine research in support of various projects in the lab.

  • Performs hands-on biology lab techniques to include PCR, Western Blot, protein & RNA analysis and mammalian tissue culture.

  • Keeps detailed records.

Lab Management

  • Assists in general day to day functions of the lab including ordering laboratory supplies, equipment maintenance and cleaning of lab benches and glassware, maintain laboratory safety manuals, organization, and maintaining lab stocks.

  • Assists in training new lab members.

  • Maintains inventory of supplies.

  • Prepares laboratory reagents.

Data Analyses

  • Evaluates and summarizes results.

  • Assists with preparation of research literature during manuscript and new grant submissions.

  • Performs primary data analysis and initial preparations of manuscripts and presentations at lab meetings.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
