Who We Are The Texas A&M University Cyclotron Institute, a Department of Energy University Facility, is jointly supported by DOE and the State of Texas and is a major technical and educational resource for the state and the nation. At the Institute, we focus on conducting basic research, educating students in accelerator-based science and technology, and providing technical capabilities for a wide variety of applications in space science, materials science, analytical procedures and nuclear medicine. What We Want

The Research Assistant will perform skilled, administrative, and managerial support in research.  This position will plan and direct certain phases in a research project. In addition, they will assist in the development of new equipment for cyclotron operations. Not to mention, this position will document and maintain operation manuals to be used as references for current cyclotron personnel and as training guides for new hires. What You Need to Know

Salary Range: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire's experience.

Work Schedule: Ability to occasionally work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, use stairs, and occasionally hand-carry light duty operations equipment

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, mathematics, or computer science

  • Experience working in a nuclear physics laboratory or similar

  • Operation of ion sources, cyclotrons, beam line elements and control systems

  • Working knowledge of software programs used for nuclear physics research

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships with people of various backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Radiation Effects Facility Operations: Shift work (operating ion sources, cyclotrons, beam line elements and Radiation Effects specific equipment) for Radiation Effects customers.  Troubleshoot/report problems with Radiation Effects specific equipment. Work with the Accelerator Technician on duty to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.

  • Cyclotron Institute Operations: Assists in the development of new equipment for cyclotron operations. Documents and maintains operation manuals to be used as references for current cyclotron personnel and as training guides for new hires. Cleans, maintains, repairs, and upgrades current operations equipment.

  • Education and Career Development: Attends training workshops and conferences on accelerator-based technologies and applications. Presents papers on completed operations equipment and perform other duties as assigned.
