What we want

The Research Assistant is responsible for conducting experiments and carrying out research projects related to NIH funding on cytomegalovirus. Potential opportunity to undertake PhD studies for highly motivated candidate after demonstrating ability. Studies utilize molecular biology, immunology, tissue culture and virology techniques. Specific training will be provided but ideal candidate will have some experience in one or more areas of research techniques. Studies utilize small animal model studies and candidate must be willing to work with animals but these duties will be limited as major focus will be bench based research. Additional duties will be supervision of undergraduate student helpers and receiving and ordering items for the lab.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Immunology) or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task, plan and organize effectively, and work cooperatively with others

  • Knowledge of computers and basic computer software related to the position

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Immunology)

  • Experience working with a variety of individuals and communities

  • Experience in molecular biology techniques

  • Experience working with animal models or in immunological assays beneficial

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines

  • Provide a safe environment that fosters respect of all faculty, staff, students, and visitors

  • Knowledge of molecular biology or immunology

Responsibilities:

  • Research Experiments - Assists in the design, planning, and coordinating of experiments in support of various research projects. Selects and performs standard laboratory techniques that include ELISAs, Western blots, PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA preparation and other techniques. Conducts routine research and keeps detailed records of data. 

  • Lab Support - Provide lab support with purchasing lab consumables and other lab support duties.

  • Collaboration - Conduct literature searches related to assigned projects; read, assess, and discuss relevant publications in the field; assist with preparation of results for publication and presentation. Prepare and communicate brief oral and/or written summaries of work when required. Assists undergraduate and/or graduate students and other laboratory, technical or field staff involved in research.

  • Data Analysis - Uses computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis.

  • Lab Maintenance - Maintain safe, clean, functional and organized work space, both in personal and communal space. Operates, maintains, and/or repairs research equipment. Perform other duties as assigned.
