The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Research Assistant to serve as a member of the research laboratory team. We desire an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. The successful applicant will bring an advanced level of molecular biology experience to the position and understand the demands of supporting executives in a fast-paced environment. Required Education:

  • Appropriate bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Basic working knowledge of molecular biology and microbiology.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological or physical science.

  • Experience in molecular biology, microbiology, and managing laboratory inventory and personnel is preferred.

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities.


Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Lab technical skills. Skilled in lab organization and management.

  • Knowledge of AggieBuy.

  • Ability to manage individuals and create a positive working environment.


Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, planning, and coordinating of experiments in support of research projects related to Salmonella. Perform experiments; saccing, plating, diluting, prep, etc.

  • Keep detailed records of data and assist with data collection. Use computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results. 

  • Train new lab members on basic lab techniques (anaerobic chamber, phage transduction, genomic DNA isolation, beta-galactosidase activity etc.)

  • Provide general lab oversight. Order lab and office supplies and equipment. Contact manufacturers for any ordering questions, price quotes, and replacement parts for lab equipment. Work with staff to ensure invoices are paid on time. Maintain Google Excel Sheet of orders not purchased through AggieBuy to ensure an efficient process of invoice processing (date ordered, account number to charge, date received, etc.). Receiving of orders.

  • Supervise student workers. Create, monitor, and maintain lab work schedules. Review and approve timesheets. Train new student workers on basic lab duties (autoclave training, trash, glassware, media preparation etc.).

  • Assist in general lab organization and maintenance. Schedule meetings and reserve rooms. Maintain lab server, create accounts for new lab members. Assist with inventory. Assist with Prism license renewals. Assist with handling EHS and BSL inspections. Maintain BSL2 Manual for the lab. This includes all updated AUP’s, amendments, and lab safety training for manuals in the lab and vivarium.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
