Position Summary:
The Shirangi Laboratory at Villanova University is seeking a Research Assistant to conduct research on the neuronal, genetic, and developmental mechanisms underlying courtship behavior in Drosophila. The Research Assistant will devote 70% of their time to a specific research project; 15% to lab support and maintenance; and 15% to an education plan funded by the NSF to integrate inner-city high school students in the Philadelphia area with the lab’s research. The Research Assistant will be expected to participate in lab meetings and journal clubs and contribute to the interactive and intellectual atmosphere of the lab. This position is ideal for a recent college graduate looking for more research and outreach experience before pursuing graduate studies.
This position is a grant-funded opportunity that is contingent on year-to-year availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performing experiments and managing an independent research project.
  • Participating in work related to general laboratory maintenance and support.
  • Participating in and aiding the development of an outreach program to bring the lab’s research to local high school students.
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.

Research project activities may include:
  • Drosophila genetics, behavioral experiments, and breeding.
  • Nervous system dissections and immunohistochemistry.
  • Molecular biology studies including PCR and cloning.
  • Generation of transgenic fly lines using CRISPR/Cas9 and other technologies.
  • General fly lab maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field.
  • The candidate should also demonstrate a strong interest in neuroscience, genetics, or behavior; have a highly organized and meticulous work ethic; and be enthusiastic about working and interacting with others in a collaborative, supportive, and dynamic lab setting.
  • Previous experience in a research laboratory (beyond lab classes) is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience with flies, dissecting tissues, studying behavior, or carrying out molecular biology protocols in a research setting is strongly preferred.
