Research Assistant position available for gap year students to support dermatology research in melanoma and dermatopathology administrative services.  This is a full-time position for a minimum of one year and may be renewable upon performance review.  Preference will be given to applicants who can commit to two years.  Opportunities for research in dermatology/dermatopathology will involve basic and translational research and are likely to result in co-authorship in scientific publications which will be highly supportive for medical school applications.  Excellent benefits and competitive salaries available.  Boston University is an equal opportunity employer.

Overall Responsibility

  • In consultation with the Principal Investigator, design and conduct experiments in cell biology, biochemistry, and cancer medicine.
  • Proficiency in basic lab techniques and principles of molecular biology.
  • Perform in vitro, cell culture, and in vivo experiments using mouse models of cancer. This may include experiments with mouse models of cancer including handling, treating, and analyzing mice.
  • Document, compile, and report data to the supervisor in oral and written form.
  • Analyze experimental data, address methodological problems in experimental protocols, and report data to supervisor.
  • Conduct laboratory tasks and organization to ensure the smooth operation of the research and clinical laboratories
  • Use discretion in prioritizing and organizing workflow and in optimizing methodologies and results.
  • Consult scientific literature and other resources as needed.
  • Independently operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including contacting service providers for routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Place orders for general lab consumables and maintain stocks of necessary reagents, solutions, and supplies.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

  • Bachelor's Degree with a major in biology/biochemistry/biotechnology or other relevant field.
  • Knowledge of information and techniques related to either biology, chemistry, or medicine is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.
  • Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems.
  • Attention to detail and ability to be thorough in completing work tasks.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
