Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Research Assistant / Research Associate, Institute of Environmental Health Sciences at its Detroit campus location.

POSITION PURPOSE:

Research Assistant or Research Associate to perform laboratory research on a National Institutes of Health (NIH)- funded project to determine the mechanisms controlling developmental expression of the human cytosolic sulfotransferase enzymes using a cell culture model of human hepatocyte differentiation and various techniques to assess gene expression.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Research Assistant:

Perform laboratory experiments as directed, maintain records of data, and perform data analysis. Assist other lab members with experiments as required. Assist with preparation of abstracts, presentations, manuscripts, and grant applications. Purchase laboratory supplies and maintain purchasing records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, and maintain records as needed for compliance with regulatory requirements. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Research Associate:

Design and perform laboratory experiments, maintain records of data, and perform data analysis. Assist other lab members with experiments as required. Prepare abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts, and assist with preparation of grant applications. Purchase laboratory supplies and maintain purchasing records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas and maintain laboratory records as needed for compliance with regulatory requirements. Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Research Assistant:

Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a biological or biomedical science discipline.

Experience: Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)

Experience with mammalian cell culture and techniques to analyze gene expression.

Research Associate:

Education: Doctorate in a biomedical science discipline.

Experience: Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience).

Experience with mammalian cell culture and techniques to analyze gene expression.

Research Associate should have evidence of scholarly productivity, e.g., by first authorship on research articles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of liver cell biology and mechanisms controlling mammalian gene expression.

Skilled in mammalian cell culture and techniques to analyze gene expression (e.g., molecular cloning, transfection, preparation of lentiviral constructs, generation of stably transduced cells, quantitative RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction), western blot, chromatin immunoprecipitation).

Working knowledge of biostatistical and bioinformatic analyses.

Ability to work independently.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.
