Essential Functions (Job Duties)
The WSU Center for Urban Studies aims to stop overdose deaths and reduce other harm related to the opioid crisis, while fostering civic engagement as a key strategy for addressing critical community challenges in the Detroit area.
We are seeking a motivated individual to lead a team of Overdose Rescue Trainers. The Program Coordinator will provide direction and support to this team of volunteer service members who teach people in the community how to provide life-saving aid during an opioid overdose emergency. High energy, a strong desire to learn, and passion for the program's mission to reduce opioid-related harm is essential to excel in this position.
Note regarding the coronavirus pandemic: The COVID-19 outbreak has required our program to adapt all program activities to be conducted in a virtual/remote format. During teleservice, team members collaborate with each other and program staff via Zoom, email, and other remote communication tools, and all community outreach and overdose rescue training sessions are conducted online. We plan to resume in-person service and activities once public health officials indicate that it is safe to do so.
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Stay informed about the opioid crisis and its impact on Michigan communities, contributing factors, and harm reduction strategies. Proactively seek out information on emergent and intersectional issues related to the opioid crisis from publications and subject matter experts.
Become knowledgeable about national AmeriCorps requirements, policies, and procedures and diligently adhere to AmeriCorps guidelines in all aspects of program operations.
Provide daily direction and oversight to a team of AmeriCorps service members (typically 15-25 members at a given time - new members are enrolled quarterly to serve on the team for a six-month period).
Lead all-team meetings on a weekly basis and meet with members individually or with smaller functional teams as needed.
Assess strengths and limitations of individual team members to inform member assignments. Provide regular feedback to members on their performance and areas for improvement. Implement disciplinary procedures as appropriate.
Review materials prepared by members and provide revision recommendations to ensure quality and accuracy (social media posts, presentation slides, flyers and other outreach materials).
Support the professional development of team members by delivering presentations on key topics during new member orientation (quarterly) and planning supplemental training on various topics throughout the year.
Track data on program outputs and accomplishments; ensure data is properly collected and entered into tracking system; and prepare regular progress reports.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of individual, team, and program performance (e.g.: mentoring, monitoring progress, adjusting protocols to achieve better results).
Assist in drafting project updates and reports for submission to funders.
Identify others working to address the opioid crisis within the community and learn about their activities; build relationships with community partners and connect potential collaborators with the appropriate Center staff.
Communicate reliably, clearly and effectively with project team members and community partners.
Maintain work plans, task lists, and project calendars on a regular basis and meet interim deadlines.
Manage team member records in WSU and AmeriCorps systems.
Perform other duties as deemed necessary to support project goals.
