The veterinary diagnostic microbiologist position, at the rank of research assistant professor, is a 12-month (calendar year), non-tenure track appointment that will direct the diagnostic microbiology service and personnel in the Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center (NVDC). The apportionment is 90% diagnostic service, 5% teaching, and 5% service. This position will be located in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Veterinary Diagnostic Microbiologist will contribute to the integrated research and teaching mission of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and IANR, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. The primary duties are to lead diagnostic microbiological services and serve as a faculty supervisor and case coordinator, specifically within the areas of molecular diagnostics and virology and/or bacteriology. Other duties include:
  • Developing, validating, and conducting tests and assays and employing appropriate laboratory procedures to detect infectious agents associated with specimens submitted to the NVDC.
  • Supervising laboratory manager(s) and other staff as appropriate.
  • Reporting results in a concise, timely, and accurate manner to NVDC faculty and pathologists, clientele of the NVDC (including referring veterinarians, animal owners, and state and federal officials), administrators, stakeholders, users, and media.
  • Assuring compliance with the NVDC quality system within their responsible sections.
  • Contributing to guest lectures, and/or other instructional areas along with other research and scholarly service activities as appropriate.
  • Developing high-impact diagnostic testing in microbiology.
  • Seeking and establishing effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations including effective integration with diagnostic groups, research groups, and educational programming.
  • Connecting with stakeholders, agencies, and/or industry partners to strengthen diagnostic, research, and educational programming.
  • Publishing in peer-reviewed journals, participating in scientific meetings, and other appropriate professional activities.
  • Mentoring colleagues through professional development, translational research, grants, and professional writing.


In addition to these duties, the individual will be expected to participate in university service including but not limited to committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in medical or veterinary microbiology, virology, immunology, microbial genetics, bacteriology, or related field and specialized training in microbiology.
  • At least 5 years diagnostic/clinical microbiology (virology and/or bacteriology) and molecular diagnostics laboratory experience (including training work).
  • Experience developing, verifying, and validating diagnostic assays using molecular or sequencing-based methods.
  • Experience working in a regulated diagnostic laboratory environment.
  • At least two years of supervisory and laboratory management experience and case management experience in an accredited diagnostic or clinical laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications
  • DVM or equivalent.
  • A record of peer reviewed publications in veterinary microbiology.
  • Diplomat of the ACVM or other relevant recognized veterinary specialty board.
  • Poultry or production animal medicine interest.
