Position Summary
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the UNC School of Medicine is recruiting for a Research Assistant Professor on the fixed-term track. The successful candidate will participate in research and training activities in the Cameron-Arnold Laboratory. Duties include but are not limited to conducting fundamental basic research on the biochemistry and biophysics of positive-strand RNA virus genome replication and recombination; and contributing to the discovery, optimization, and mechanism of action studies of inhibitors of RNA viruses with pandemic potential. Ongoing projects in the lab include: understanding the elementary steps of viral RdRp-catalyzed RNA recombination; assembly, and function of the SARS CoV-2 replicase and exoribonuclease complex; and development and characterization of inhibitors targeting viral proteins and enzymes, including polymerases, helicases, NTPases, proteases, and exoribonucleases. The candidate will be responsible for the design, implementation, execution, and interpretation of biochemical experiments. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other researchers in the field, write and publish the results in scientific journals, attend conferences, and participate in preparing progress reports and applications for financial support. Secondary responsibilities include contributing to general laboratory management duties and supervision and training of postdoctoral fellows, students, and technicians.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
PhD in a biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology or other related and/or relevant disciplines. Experience with expression, purification, and characterization of proteins and enzymes. Experience using state-of-the-art approaches yielding quantitative and/or kinetic data and able to perform corresponding data analysis.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Post-doctoral experience. Experience using mammalian expression systems, cell culture, and viral replication assays. Experience with recombinant DNA techniques.
