Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Biology is one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. The department is composed of 42 Tenure/Tenure Track faculty and 15 fixed-term faculty. The department currently has 50 graduate students, 40 post-docs and employs approximately 70 additional graduate students from other departments each semester to assist in our teaching mission. In addition, the department includes 5 EHRA Non-Faculty employees who support the research mission of our faculty and students. With approximately 2,682 undergraduate majors, we are among the largest in the College of Arts and Sciences. We enroll 9,822 students in classes each year. Within the faculty ranks, there is a Departmental Chair, three Associate Chairs, a Director of Undergraduate Studies and a Director of Graduate Studies. The department is supported by an administrative staff of 20.
Position Summary
The Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks applicants for a non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Research Assistant Professor to work with a dynamic group of biologists studying diverse aspects of cell, molecular, and developmental biology, and to independently manage the core microscopy facility within the department and participate in the department’s broader research and educational missions. Responsibilities will include providing expert guidance and training to lab users from research labs within the department as well as external researchers, ensuring proper use of confocal, super-resolution, and light sheet microscopes, maintaining the microscopes to ensure optimal performance, coordinating service visits as needed, assisting investigators with image acquisition and analysis, and researching new technologies in order to keep lab equipment up to date. They will be responsible for tracking facility usage and working with accounting for timely billing, and for ensuring the availability of necessary supplies and materials for laboratory procedures. As the subject matter expert, they will be responsible for identifying and negotiating with vendors for the acquisition of new equipment. When possible, they will submit grant proposals for new equipment and manuscripts on imaging innovation for publication. This position will also be expected to teach 1 course on microscopy per academic year, targeting graduate and advanced undergraduate students within the department.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
The candidate must have a doctorate (or equivalent degree) in biomedical sciences or other related field. They must have postdoctoral training in a relevant discipline and previous experience with advanced light microscopy imaging systems.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary, funded research programs, as well as a track record of scholarly accomplishment using state-of-the-art imaging approaches is preferred. Proficiency in a programing language related to image analysis (MATLAB, R) will be preferred. Prior experience in a service-oriented position is a plus. 
Should have strong experience in state-of-the-art microscopy techniques, including, but not limited to fluorescence microscopy (wide-field, laser scanning confocal, spinning disk confocal, live imaging, FRAP, FRET, FCS, and super-resolution imaging) as well as applied knowledge of imaging software programs including Metamorph, Zen, ImageJ.
