Description of Work
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor in Transportation Engineering who will be closely affiliated with the Nebraska Transportation Center (NTC), a College of Engineering research entity. This position is a non-tenure track, 12-month appointment. Successful applicants will have the requisite experience in NTC’s core research areas (https://unlcms.unl.edu/engineering/nebraska-transportation-center/research-areas.php ) and a demonstrable research capability that will enable them to develop proposals and secure funding in these areas. The successful candidate should be prepared to collaborate with colleagues, develop new research initiatives, and participate in ongoing research projects.
Responsibilities
  • Manage, conduct, and participate in various research studies within fields of traffic engineering, transportation operations, transportation planning, transportation safety, transportation sustainability and resilience, transportation data science, connected and autonomous vehicles, smart infrastructure, logistics, and other areas to be determined.
  • Perform statistical analysis, computer simulation, optimization, and other applicable methods for research studies in the aforementioned areas.
  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) on research studies.
  • Prepare and submit proposals/budgets to acquire new funding.
  • Meet with prospective clients to develop research partnerships and funded projects.
  • Prepare, write, review, and edit research reports, refereed journal articles, conference papers, research summaries, and status/progress reports.
  • Prepare and provide technical presentations for research sponsors.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely-related field.
  • Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely-related field prior to the start date of the appointment.
  • Expertise in traffic engineering, transportation operations, transportation planning, transportation safety, transportation sustainability and resilience, transportation data science, connected and autonomous vehicles, smart infrastructure, or logistics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering and/or a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering.
  • Strong record of scholarly achievement (20 or more refereed publications) in the areas of traffic engineering, transportation operations, transportation planning, transportation safety, transportation sustainability and resilience, transportation data science, connected and autonomous vehicles, smart infrastructure, or logistics.
  • Relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience.
  • Strong record of grant applications and funding (10 or more funded projects and with one or more funded projects as PI of an Nebraska Department of Transportation project).
  • Working knowledge and/or research experience in four or more of the following areas:
  • Work zone safety.
  • Highway-rail grade crossings safety.
  • Traffic engineering/operations.
  • Crash analysis.
  • Traffic simulation using software such as VISSIM, AIMSUN, and Transmodeler.
  • Vehicle dynamics simulation using software such as CarSim and TruckSim.
  • Autonomous driving systems simulation using software such as CARLA.
  • Active PE license. Successful candidates without professional licensure will be expected to obtain licensure within two years of hire.
