Job Description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston (UH) invites nominations and applications for a non-tenure track faculty position at the Research Assistant Professor level beginning Summer 2017. High-caliber candidates are sought for conducting original research in electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical testing of thin film high temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes. A key responsibility of this position is to investigate important issues such as flux pinning, critical current performance, AC losses, stabilization and mechanical robustness so as to support the development of improved HTS tapes being fabricated at the University of Houston’s Advanced Manufacturing Institute directed by Prof. Venkat Selvamanickam. Several reel-to-reel thin film vapor deposition tools, electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical testing equipment and advanced characterization systems are available in the Advanced Manufacturing Institute.

Minimum Qualifications

Appointment to our faculty requires a Ph.D. in Engineering or Physics with specialization in Applied Superconductivity, 5+ years of relevant work experience and a strong publication record in this field.

Preferred Qualifications

5+ years of hands-on experimental and computer modeling experience in electromagnetic testing of HTS tapes at high magnetic fields and low temperatures as well as expertise in flux pinning, AC loss, and stabilization mechanisms. 5+ years experience in designing, building and commissioning of experimental tools for testing and/or processing of superconductor tapes in cryogenic, high magnetic field and vacuum conditions. Accordingly, the candidate would have a strong working experience in electronics, software programming, CAD software and mechanical construction.
