Department Summary

The Department of Geography and the Environment offers exceptional quality education and unique programs and degrees. Faculty research in our department emphasizes collaboration between peers and mentorship of students, both graduate and undergraduate, in challenging areas of focus.

Our diverse roster of projects requires cutting-edge laboratory and field technology that helps facilitate high-level analysis of geographical factors including an extensive collection of geographic positioning equipment and state-of-the-art image processing equipment used in remote sensing

We invite applications for a part-time non-tenure-track research faculty position, as a Research Assistant Professor. The position begins on February 1, 2023. The initial appointment will be made for a one-year appointment and reappointment are subject to the availability of external funding.

This position will work with the Department of Geography and the Environment in a research capacity.

Position Summary

This position supports the ongoing development of research in mountainous regions of Mesoamerica including climate reconstructions in tropical settings using tree-rings. The position will also make use of climate information at different timescales (from months to millennia) to investigate historical and future human-environment interactions and the implications to policymaking and development. The position will include research in tropical dendrochronology; climate variability and change; seasonal to sub-seasonal climate forecasts; climate impacts on agriculture; climate-health-migration interactions and satellite-derived vegetation monitoring. It is expected that the researcher will also publish his/her research and help with proposal development.

Essential Functions

• 50% - Perform research on tropical dendrochronology; climate variability and change; seasonal to sub-seasonal climate forecasts; climate impacts on agriculture; climate-health-migration interactions and satellite-derived vegetation monitoring
• 20% - Individually and collaboratively write technical conference and journal publications based on research results, attend research conferences and technical meetings with sponsors and give conference presentations.
• 20% - Individually and collaboratively write research proposals to federal, state, and industrial entities.
• 10% - Assist and mentor graduate students in research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral.
• High level experimental skills in tropical dendrochronology, S2S climate forecasting, Remote Sensing.
• High level analytical skillset required.
• Technical writing for conference and journal publications.
• Vision for implementing and promoting justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $33,500.
