Description

The Center for Advanced Radiation Sources at the University of Chicago seeks applications for a Research Assistant Professor. The Research Assistant Professor will serve as a Beamline Scientist and will be expected to facilitate scientific collaboration, develop new techniques, and support existing synchrotron radiation studies. The position will be located at The University of Chicago GeoSoilEnviroCARS (GSECARS) Sector 13 of the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory. This facility provides unique scientific opportunities related to investigations of minerals and compounds in situ at extreme conditions, using high-resolution x-ray diffraction, computed tomography and x-ray spectroscopy techniques in combination with optical methods (CW and pulsed laser heating, Raman, Brillouin, and other types of optical spectroscopies). This position is expected to start on or about September 1st 2023.


Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD in Earth sciences, experimental physics, or related field.
  • A minimum of five years, beyond PhD training, conducting independent experimental research at a synchrotron x-ray facility.
  • Must be able to fulfill requirements for access to Argonne National Laboratory and the Advanced Photon Source.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Training in synchrotron experiments.
  • Experience in interpretation of structure and properties of minerals based on single crystal (multi-grain) and poly-crystalline x-ray diffraction techniques.
  • Experience with high-pressure X-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy, diamond anvil cell (DAC) techniques.
