Nature of Work

The Colorado School of Public Health (ColoradoSPH) has an opening for a full-time position at the rank of Research Assistant Professor or Research Associate Professor.  This position will be based primarily at ACCORDS—the Adult and Child Consortium for Health Outcomes Research and Delivery Science—a program that is jointly funded by the School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado to support the growth of outcomes and T3-T4 translational research.

ACCORDS serves as a center for health care professionals, researchers and analysts from across the University of Colorado to collaborate, pool skills and talents and apply team science to pursue health outcomes research and education. In addition, ACCORDS fosters strong research and educational collaborations with external partners including Denver Health, Kaiser Permanente, other health care delivery systems, the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment and community organizations. ACCORDS has programs in Dissemination and Implementation Science, Data Science, Education, Shared Decision Making, and Community Engagement and Outreach; as well as Methodological Cores in Biostatistics for Health Services Research, Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research, Economic Analysis, Practice-based Research Networks (PBRNs), and Mobile Health (mHealth) and Informatics.

The successful candidate for this position will collaborate with health outcomes researchers, conduct original research in health services, and/or pursue advancements in biostatistical methodology. In addition, there are opportunities for mentoring and teaching in the ACCORDS sponsored fellowships and Education program. ACCORDS includes over 70 faculty members based in multiple academic departments, schools and at affiliated institutions.

The successful candidate will be a faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics (BIOS), one of five departments in the Colorado School of Public Health (ColoradoSPH). Faculty and students in the Department apply analytic methods, statistical reasoning and information management techniques to health data in medical and public health fields. Professional and research activities include the design and analysis in basic, applied and translational research, design and analysis of clinical trials, statistical consulting, development of new statistical methods, disease information services, research databases and more.

The Colorado School of Public Health is a collaborative endeavor involving the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CU Anschutz), Colorado State University (CSU), and the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). The Colorado School of Public Health is the first and only accredited school of public health in the Rocky Mountain Region, attracting top tier faculty and students from across the country, and providing vital contributions towards ensuring our region’s health and wellbeing. Supervision Received

The faculty member will be supervised by the Chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics and by the Director of ACCORDS. The Chair of Biostatistics and Informatics, other faculty in DBI and senior faculty members in the ACCORDS Biostatistics Core are available for mentorship and guidance. 

Supervision Exercised

This position can have limited supervisory responsibilities with early-career research instructors, professional research assistants, or graduate research assistants seeking MPH, MS, DrPH or PhD degrees.

Examples of Work Performed

Responsibilities for the faculty member may include but are not limited to:

  • Participate in collaborative research, including grant and paper writing, developing analytic plans, supervising up to three Masters’ level data analysts.
  • Develop applied biostatistical methods research in their focused area of interest, eventually seeking funding for that research whenever possible.
  • With respect to the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics, the faculty member will have limited service obligations and may engage in teaching activities as negotiated with the Chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics and the Director of ACCORDS. 
  • Teach and mentor fellows and junior faculty in ACCORD programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of basic statistical principles relevant in medical research
  • Strong programming skills in a common statistical software package (such as SAS, R, S-Plus, Python, MATLAB and/or SPSS)
  • Good organizational skills across individual projects, managing own workload
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work with biomedical investigators and colleagues in the DBI, CSPH and more broadly with other units on the Anschutz Medical Campus
  • Ability to contribute to the growth and development of the DBI and CSPH
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong knowledge of statistical computing and/or Bayesian inference

Salary and Benefits

The salary range has been established at

Research Assistant Professor- $100,000 to $130,000

Research Associate Professor.- $130,000 to $150,000 

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, rank, internal equity, experience, education, and area of expertise. The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Qualifications

 

RESEARCH ASSISTANT PROFESSOR:

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science, applied mathematics or related fields that provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years of post-doctoral experience in an academic setting or research institute
  • Expertise in `big data’ analysis with primary areas of interest including electronic health records, pragmatic trial design including cluster-randomized trials, advanced techniques to approach causal inference and confounding in observational studies, and/or structural equation modeling.
  • Evidence of independent research through publications
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead the biostatistics elements of clinical or translational research projects.
  • Experience collaborating with clinician scientists.

 

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science, applied mathematics or related fields that provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • At least five years postdoctoral experience in an academic setting or research institute
  • Demonstrated ability successfully leading the biostatistical components of clinical or translational research projects.
  • Consistent sustained role in the development, design or management of a research program with external funding.  
  • A portfolio of peer reviewed publications.
  • Experience collaborating with clinician scientists.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in `big data’ analysis with primary areas of interest including electronic health records, pragmatic trial design including cluster-randomized trials, advanced techniques to approach causal inference and confounding in observational studies, and/or structural equation modeling.
  • Demonstrated success as the lead investigator on externally funded research projects.
  • Demonstrated record of mentorship of junior researchers and analysts of clinical or translational research projects.
