Research Assistant Professor in Data Science and Climate Change

Salary:

The base salary range for this position will be $10,000 - $12,250 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Position Description  

The University of Washington (UW) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) invites applications for a full-time, Research Assistant Professor position, on a 12-month service period. The successful candidate will be expected to secure external grant funding. The position will focus on the use of data science methods and computational hydrologic and weather predictions models for mitigating the impacts of climate change on natural and built environments and for improving the community resilience to natural disasters. Potential areas of research focus for this position include, but are not limited to the development of novel data science methods for efficiently storing, analyzing, and visualizing large environmental data sets. We anticipate that the successful candidates will build machine learning and artificial intelligence methods to explore the integration of data-driven and process-based numerical models to address complex problems of global change.  The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop collaborations with other entities across campus, such the UW eScience Institute . The successful candidate will be expected to engage in open source science, which may include leading or contributing to open source software, building, deploying and sharing reproducible workflows, or creating frameworks for open data sharing. At UW, they will engage programs that build community and support training in open science practices.  The search is open to candidates with expertise in Civil and Environmental Engineering or a related field. The anticipated start date is summer 2024. This position is not eligible for tenure.

Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a PhD, or foreign equivalent, in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or related discipline by the date of appointment, and demonstrated track record of research funding. Applicants must have strong computational background.
