About the Department
The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is an institutional research center administered by North Carolina State University. Located within the University’s visionary Centennial Campus, ITRE conducts surface, water, and air transportation research, while providing professional training and educational opportunities. The Institute serves all 16 statewide campuses in the University of North Carolina (UNC) system and partners with transportation professionals around the globe. 
 
The University of North Carolina, Office of the President, designated ITRE in a Memorandum of Understanding to work in partnership with the Technical University of Lisbon in the area of Transportation and Environment. ITRE became a member of the North Carolina Transportation Consortium in 2002, and was the lead institute for the Southeastern Transportation Center (a USDOT University Transportation Center) from 1989-1995.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Assistant currently acts as the Validation Lead for the North Carolina Non-Motorized Volume Data Program (NC NMVDP) which involves collecting validation video data collection and coordinating its reduction for bicycle and pedestrian counters in over a dozen communities in the state. This position also assists with running trials with the Highway System’s Group in-vehicle simulator and with engineering tasks related to maintenance and calibration of the device. 
 
The Research Assistant will contribute to the Highway Systems Group within ITRE, and will be responsible for conducting field installations of sensing instrumentation, field data collection, and assisting with data collection from video. 
 
The Research Assistant will work closely with other field technicians and the equipment manager to maintain equipment and update equipment and supplies inventories to ensure instruments operate correctly or are replaced when needed. This Research Assistant will primarily work with video collection devices and bicycle and pedestrian count equipment (inductive loops, infrared sensors, and pneumatic tubes) but may have the opportunity to work with a variety of other sensors and instruments, including but not limited to thermal cameras, in-ground (electromagnetic loops) and above-ground (microwave, side-fire radar) sensors, LiDAR and radar speed detection, and GPS-enabled travel recorders. 
 
The Research Assistant must be willing to travel for data collection and/or field installation or maintenance activities on an as-needed basis. Travel is expected approximately 10- 20% of the time in a given year and may be day-long trips or multi-day overnight trips. Travel opportunities will primarily be within the state of North Carolina but may include some out-of-state work and can be as long as five or more days in a row, but are typically less.

Minimum Education and Experience
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantive relevant independent experience and education. 
Other Required Qualifications
  • Experience with basic Microsoft applications; ability to learn and retain new software applications. 
  •  Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide array of people, from upper management trying to set up data collection or installations to students who need training or oversight on how to work with equipment to local agencies in whose jurisdictions equipment will be installed. 
  •  Ability to be “hands-on” with equipment and installations.
