Research Assistant - Mechanical Engineering

In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

We are seeking a Research Assistant to join the Amir Barati Farimani Lab in our mechanical engineering department. The Barati Farimani’s lab, the Mechanical and Artificial Intelligence laboratory (MAIL), at Carnegie Mellon University is broadly interested in the application of machine learning, data science, and molecular dynamics simulations to health and bio-engineering problems. In this role, you will follow research plans to collect, record, and manipulate research data. You will also work on developing AI models for design and swarm robotics, maintain accuracy and detailed research records, and such other tasks that are assigned to you.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Developing ML algorithms for time series forecasting

  • Training deep learning algorithms using GPUs and recording data

  • Writing manuscripts and reports

  • Attending weekly meetings

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.  Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Skills in using Pytorch and coding is required

  • Coding, deep learning libraries such as Pytorch

  • Familiarity with Large Language Models (LLMs)
